Our Story

Our vision is to make The Moutere the cultural and social heart of the region; where history, hospitality, music, food, and community come together.

The Moutere Inn has always been more than a place to eat and drink. It is a meeting point. A landmark. A piece of living history. As the new custodians of this iconic pub, our vision is not to reinvent it, but to reinvigorate it.

We see The Moutere as a thriving regional hub that honours its heritage while evolving for a new generation. A place where locals feel proud to gather, travellers feel lucky to discover, and artists, makers, growers and producers feel inspired to collaborate.

NEW OWNERSHIP 2026

John & Jane both born and raised in the Nelson Tasman region, have spent their lives creating unique and memorable brands and experiences that bring people together.

As the previous owners of Rabbit Island Huts, Rabbit Island Coffee, Alberta’s Mapua and brand studio Hothouse; they have built businesses grounded in quality, authenticity, and genuine hospitality. Their approach has always been family led and community focused, creating spaces where people can slow down, connect, and feel at home.

With their new venture at The Moutere, John and Jane see an opportunity to continue that journey. With a deep appreciation for community, hospitality, and the character of the region they call home, they see The Moutere not just as a business, but as a legacy to nurture.

Award winning Chef; Alistair Forster.

We’re delighted to welcome Alistair Forster and his team to The Moutere, named as one of five Beef + Lamb New Zealand Ambassador Chefs for 2017. Expect our food offering to evolve over the coming months as we get settled in, and look out for special occasion set menus.
